Our Story
| Samantha’s story begins on August 22, 2007; as this is the day our beautiful and healthy Samantha, or Sammi as we called her, entered our world. Life was good…my husband and I were happy, excited, and felt so very blessed. As a proud and excited working mom, I went back to work after nearly three months of maternity leave on November 7, 2007. I was only at work that day for a short while when I received “the call.” This call was from the Fishers, IN police asking me to go to the hospital. When I arrived, I was informed that Samantha had gone down for her morning nap and never woke up. It was determined that SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) took Sammi’s life that day.
Unfortunately my story is not an isolated one, as SIDS takes the lives of nearly 2500 babies in the United States each year, yet no one knows why. I thought this number seemed small compared to the number of babies born in the US, until my family became part of the statistic. Never in a million years did I think we would be a SIDS statistic. However, like so many other families, we learned that SIDS knows no boundaries, and it can take the life of any baby at any time. SIDS is a silent killer, and every baby is at risk regardless of how good a parent you think you are. I was ignorant enough to think this could never happen to me or my family; as we are well educated and were extremely attentive parents. We followed all the rules, and yet we are still left with empty arms and angry hearts. Because of our experience, my family and I created “Shoot Fore Sammi” in August 2008. This golf outing is not only a day for us to honor our beautiful Samantha, but it is also a day to raise money in hopes that we will put an end to this disgusting thief of life we call SIDS. I am forever grateful to everyone’s support, and may Sammi live forever in all our hearts… ~Heather Hubbard |
